We are a relatively new parish, but have a long history in Northern Rensselaer County. On Septermber 6, 1839, eight years before the Diocese of Albany was established, St. John's was founded in Schaghticoke, NY. Two mission churches, St. Monica's (late 1860's) and Our Lady of Good Council (1889), were eventually established from St. John's.
St. Monica's became a parish in 1888, and was given charge of two more mission churches, St. Bridget's in Buskirk, and St. George's in Pittstown. St. George's became a separate parish in 1917. Over fifty years later, St. Bonaventure's parish began in Speigletown on November 13, 1970. On April 22, 2001, St. John's, St. Monica's, and Our Lady of Good Council merged, and became the Church of the Holy Trinity. The name of the new parish was considered appropriate because three distinct parishes were merged into one worshipping community.
During the Diocese of Albany's, "Called to be Church" process, the parishes of Holy Trinity and St. Bonaventure's were merged, and became Transfiguration Parish on July 1, 2010. The parish maintains worship sites and offices in Schaghticoke and Speigletown with weekend Masses celebrated at both locations.
Transfiguration Parish is blessed with a rich history from the parishes that preceded it. The church in Schaghticoke has stained glass windows that were donated by the first ten pastors of St. Monica's Church. In addition, the Stations of the Cross in Schaghticoke were hand carved in Italy for St. Monica's Church, and became fixtures at the Church of the Holy Trinity during the merger in 2001.
The church in Speigletown has a chapel in addition to fre primary church. The chapel is an excellent site for prayer and quiet reflection in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The site in Speigletown was designed as a mufti-use facility with ofice and classroom space, and a large hall for church and community functions. In recent years a patio and barbeque pit was added outside the parish hall in Speigletown to further enhance community life. The Rectory is located at the Speigletown site.
Transfiguration Parish is blessed to be one parish with two unique worship sites. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Transfiguration Parish is the result of combining sacred items, worship and prayer traditions, and our rich history to create a vibrant Catholic Community.
